RESPIRATORY CARE (RT-AS)

PROGRAM GOAL: The purpose of
this program is to prepare students to become competent respiratory care practitioners by:

Demonstrating the ability to comprehend, apply and evaluate clinical information relevant
to
the practitioner role. |

2.

Demonstrating the
technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role. |
| 3. |
Demonstrating personal behaviors consistent
with professional and employer expectations for
the registered respiratory care practitioner. |
ADMISSIONS:
| A. |
Applicant must be admitted to the general college. |
| B. |
Applicant must take the CPT placement test. Minimum
placement scores for admission are required, see D-3.
The placement test is given by the testing center at Gulf Coast Community
College. |
| C. |
After taking the above test, the applicant must have an informational interview
with the health sciences admissions counselor at (850) 913-3311). |
| D. |
A completed application
will consist of: |

Statement of Why You Want To Be a Respiratory
Care Practitioner. |
| 3. |
CPT minimum scores: Reading 83, Arithmetic 68, English 83. (It is suggested that
students take the algebra CPT also since a minimum algebra score of 72 will be
required before graduation.) |
| 4. |
High-school transcript or GED scores to the Office of Admissions and Records and
to
the health sciences recruiter. |
| 5. |
Transcripts from any college
attended to the Office of Admissions and Records and to
the health sciences recruiter. All transfer
credit must be evaluated by the admissions
office before program acceptance. |
| 6. |
A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater
in previous college work. |
| 7. |
Satisfactory physical exam (to be completed after conditional
acceptance). |
| 8. |
Completion of CPR and HIV/AIDS
course (to be taken before starting program). |
Selection: The program
starts once each year. Students are selected in groups of 7 to 9 on December 15 (December
1 deadline); 7 to 9 on April 15 (April 1 deadline); and additional openings are selected
August 15.
Preference: Applicants
having completed any of the following courses with a C or better will have selection preference: BSC 2085, BSC 2085L, NUR
1143, NUR 1142, BSC 2086, BSC 2086L, and OST 1257.
